USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Championships day 4 recap

7/27/2018

GREENSBORO, North Carolina -- The USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Championships continued on with warmer weather Thursday. 14 champions were crowned with only qualifying races on the track and all the championship finals taking place on the field.

Kharisma Watkins (Watkins Family United) set a new national record in the 8 & under 200m. In heat two, Watkins exploded off the start line, grew a sizable lead on the turn and crossed the line in 28.86, breaking Madison Poythress’ 2017 record of 29.42.

The women’s 17-18 long jump brought the heat early as the first final of day four. Prommyse Hoosier (USATF Indiana) opened strong, setting a high standard for the competition with a 5.80m/19-0.5 jump and kept her momentum going. Hoosier’s best jump came on her fourth attempt as she propelled herself to a 6.02m/19-9 jump. LaQwasia Stepney (Dashers Track) was the only other long jumper in the division to land over six meters with a 6.01m/19-8.75 leap.

Donte Dent Jr. (Transitions Academy) and Caden Ganashamoorthy (Speed Unlimited) both cleared 1.40m/4-7 to take first and second, respectively. Dent Jr cleared the height with confidence on his first try to take gold based on the number of attempts.

Tyse Todorovich (Helena Vigilante Runners) dominated the boys 7-8 shot put sending all of his throws past the eight meter mark. Todorovich bested the field by more than a meter with his 8.53m/28-1 fourth attempt heave.

The boys 13-14 high jump was no match for 14-year-old Ray Zhao (Flippen Flyers). After Amare Hall cleared his highest 1.80m/5-10.75 jump Zhao took the opportunity to shine as the lone jumper, ultimately clearing 1.95m/6-4.75 before going out on an American record attempt of 2.01m/6-7.

The 2018 USATF Hershey Junior Olympic Championships is USATF’s single largest event and will be broadcast live Thursday through Sunday, July 25. The broadcast will begin each day at 8:00am ET with the first scheduled running event. Click here for live coverage on USATF.TV+.
