Sean Burrell’s lightning speed leads to American youth 200m record

7/25/2018

GREENSBORO, North Carolina -- The 2018 USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Championships were jam packed with 14 championship finals over the course of nearly 14 hours of competition that saw two rain delays of 90 minutes and 60 minutes respectively. The highlight of the day, however, came after competition resumed from the second delay with qualifying heats of the 200m.

Sean Burrell (Greater King David Track Club) sped his way to an American youth record in the 15-16 age group clocking 20.90, finishing 1.5 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Burrell took down Tyrese Cooper’s 2015 15-16 age group record of 20.98 and will enter Thursday’s semi-final round with the fastest qualifying time by more than one second. Burrell’s previous personal best was 21.27 from the 2018 Region 6 (Alabama, Southern, Tennessee) prelims.

In the boy’s triple jump, Christopher Preddie (Jump Corps), came close to a new national record in the 13-14 age group. Preddie leapt 13.37m/43-10.5 short of Marcus Krah’s 2011 national record setting jump of 13.43m/44-0.75. Zachariah Branch (Vegas Lightning Track) finished second with a jump of 13.24m/43-5.25.

Kiana Lowry (Track Houston Youth Track Club) took the lead of the girls 15-16 shot put in the first round with a 12.72m/41-8.75 throw and maintained the lead through the first five attempts. In the sixth round Christalee Kirby (USATF Southwestern) and McKenzie Salazar (Osprey Track Club) launched their way to first and second place with throws of 13.09m/42-11.5 and 13.08m/42-11, respectively.

In the women’s shot put, Kathleen Young (USATF Illinois) bested the field by nearly a meter in the women’s 17-18 division. Young took the lead on the first attempt and crossed the 15m barrier with her fifth round heave of 15.42m/50-0.
