Greensboro, North Carolina -- The 2018 USATF hershey National Junior Olympic Championships started with 17 national titles being claimed during day one of competition at Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The girl’s 3000m race walk ended in a thrilling photo finish. Angelica Harris (Elgin Sharks Track Club) out leaned her teammate Heather Durrant (Elgin Sharks Track Club) crossing the line in 16:09.44 just ahead of Durrant’s 16:09.55.

Jacob Furland (USATF New England) won the 17-18 age group hammer throw by more than two meters. Furland was one of only two competitors to surpass 60m with a toss of 63.27/207-7.

DeShanae Norman (USATF Oregon) won the girls 13-14 age group pentathlon. Norman’s first place finish in the high jump (1.60m/5-3) and second place finish in the long jump (5.03m/16-6) propelled her to first overall and the eventual pentathlon national title. Norman won with 3,163 points, 178 more than second place finisher Kaiha Gayles’ (USATF Pacific Northwest) 2,985 points.

In the boys 13-14 pentathlon, Gary Moore Jr. (Connecticut Hawks Track) took the national title scoring 3,190 points. Moore finished top three in four of the five events, including a winning throw in the shot put of 14.23m/46-8.25 and a second place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m/5-7. Christian Barker (D4 Training Group) finished second with 2,905 points.

Logan Coles (Ocean State Hammerheads) decidedly won the boys 15-16 age group hammer throw with a 58.35m/191-5 throw. After fouling his first throw, Cole took over the lead and maintained it through the competition. Cole’s final toss bested the field by nearly eleven meters. Thomas Kitchell (St. Janes) had the second best throw of the day with a fourth round effort of 47.82m/156-10.
